What Does a Wedding Celebrant Actually Do? (Apart From Showing Up and Talking?)

Legally speaking, the answer is pretty bloody simple.

We get you married.

That’s it.

There’s obviously a little more to it than that, but if we’re talking about the fundamental reason you need an authorised marriage celebrant in Australia, that’s your answer.

As a Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrant, I’m authorised under the Marriage Act 1961 to solemnise marriages in accordance with Australian law.

That means ensuring the legal requirements are met, the necessary words are spoken, the paperwork is completed correctly and your marriage is registered through the appropriate state or territory authority.

Want to know exactly what’s legally required? I’ve already covered that in my blogs about how long your wedding ceremony should be and the three marriage documents you need to know about.

But that’s the legal stuff.

What about everything else?

The Bloke With the Microphone

When I first chat with couples, I often explain that most people have a fairly straightforward understanding of what a wedding celebrant does.

We’re the bloke or chick standing at the front, saying a bunch of nice things into a microphone.

And depending on how good we are at it, we can either set the tone for an absolutely cracking wedding day…

Or the ceremony can be an absolute fizzer!

But here’s what most people don’t realise.

The ceremony you witness on the wedding day is only a small part of the work that goes into creating it.

The Real Work Happens Long Before the Wedding

Weeks, months or sometimes even years before the big day, there’s a fair bit happening behind the scenes.

And I’m not just talking about paperwork.

I’m talking about getting to know the couple.

Understanding their personalities, their relationship, their families and, most importantly, what they want their wedding ceremony to feel like.

Because every couple is different.

Some want plenty of laughs. Others want something a little more heartfelt and romantic. Most want a combination of both.

My job is to understand that vision and create a ceremony that reflects it.

Not what I think their ceremony should look like.

What they want it to look like.

And that takes time, preparation, communication and a fair bit of work that nobody sitting in the audience will ever see.

Organised? Absolutely. Living in Your Pocket? Absolutely Not.

Something I pride myself on is having a really systematic approach to working with my couples.

I’ve developed my own process for gathering the information I need, getting to know people properly and turning everything into a ceremony that genuinely reflects who they are.

And no, I’m not about to give away all my little tricks of the trade.

A magician never reveals his secrets.

But here’s what I will tell you.

I’m not going to harass the shit out of you throughout your wedding planning journey.

You won’t receive emails from me every fortnight asking how you’re going just for the sake of staying in your inbox.

You’ve got enough going on.

Instead, I have a structured approach with appropriate check-ins along the way.

I’m available whenever you need me, but I’m not going to unnecessarily complicate your planning process.

And as we get closer to the wedding, we’ll work through the finer details together.

You’ll have the opportunity to review and approve your ceremony script, discuss how everything will unfold and make sure we’re all on the same page.

The goal?

To arrive on your wedding day feeling completely confident about what’s going to happen.

No unnecessary surprises.

No wondering what your celebrant is going to say.

Just the reassurance that everything has been prepared with your personalities, preferences and vision in mind.

So, What Are You Actually Paying For?

Yes, you’re paying for someone who’s legally authorised to marry you.

That’s the non-negotiable part.

But beyond that, you’re investing in their experience, preparation, creativity, communication and ability to bring your vision to life.

You’re trusting someone to stand in front of your favourite people and set the tone for one of the biggest days of your life.

And ideally, make it look bloody effortless.

Because when a ceremony flows beautifully, when the laughs land, the heartfelt moments feel genuine and everyone walks away thinking, “That was so them,” there’s usually been a fair bit of work behind the scenes to make that happen.

The legal requirements are what make you married. Everything else is what makes the ceremony yours.

And that’s what I reckon a great wedding celebrant should deliver.

Happy planning.

Ryan.
