Winter Weddings in Southeast Queensland?

Bloody Brilliant, I Reckon!

Whoever decided winter wasn’t a good time to get married clearly hasn’t spent much time in Queensland!

Seriously.

Somewhere along the way, the idea that winter weddings should be avoided seems to have become a bit of an unwritten rule.

And look, I get it.

If you’re planning a wedding somewhere down south, where winter can mean freezing temperatures, miserable weather and guests spending more time trying to stay warm than enjoying themselves, perhaps there’s some merit to that thinking.

But here in Southeast Queensland?

I call bullshit!

Because we’re fortunate enough to live in a part of the world where winter can be absolutely beautiful.

And I’m going to put my hand up and say something that might surprise a few people.

I reckon we should be having MORE winter weddings!

Let’s Talk About the Weather, Shall We?

There’s a reason certain times of the year are considered peak wedding season.

Generally speaking, couples are chasing beautiful weather.

And fair enough.

Whether you’re dreaming of a beachside ceremony, a stunning hinterland backdrop or one of the incredible outdoor wedding venues scattered throughout Southeast Queensland, the weather plays a pretty important role.

But here’s something I think deserves a little more attention.

Beautiful weather doesn’t always mean comfortable weather.

And if you’ve ever attended an outdoor wedding in Queensland during the warmer months, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

The sun is shining. The venue looks incredible. Everyone’s dressed to impress.

And meanwhile…

Half the guests are desperately searching for shade, the bridal party is slowly melting, and the groom looks like he’s just finished running a marathon.

All before the ceremony has even started.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’ve officiated some absolutely incredible weddings during the warmer months.

But I’ve also stood beside plenty of grooms wearing dark suits in direct sunlight, watching the sweat slowly make its way down their foreheads.

And occasionally, I’ll get that look of…

“Mate… why are we doing this?”

To which my response is usually something along the lines of…

“Don’t look at me, mate. This was your idea!”

And we have a laugh.

And of course, there are ways to make those warmer ceremonies a little more comfortable.

Hand fans, parasols and umbrellas are all popular options, and they can actually make for some pretty cute photos too.

But they’re also another expense and another little detail to organise, and another obstacle to interfere with guests’ view of the couple.

Not necessarily a bad thing, just something else to factor into the planning.

Which raises a pretty fair question.

Why are we so quick to overlook winter?

Queensland Winters Are a Different Beast!

Let’s be honest.

Winter in Southeast Queensland isn’t exactly the same experience as winter in Melbourne or Hobart.

We’re talking about a region where winter often brings beautiful sunny days, cooler temperatures and some genuinely spectacular conditions for outdoor celebrations.

And when you think about the incredible variety of wedding venues we have available, it starts to make a whole lot of sense.

Beachside ceremonies on the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast.

Stunning hinterland properties surrounded by rolling hills and greenery.

Beautiful garden weddings, private estates and everything in between.

All without necessarily having to battle the intense heat and humidity that can accompany our warmer months.

Now, am I suggesting every winter wedding is guaranteed perfect weather?

Absolutely not.

We’re talking about Mother Nature here. She does whatever the bloody hell she wants.

And yes, winter evenings can get chilly, particularly in the hinterland.

But with a little planning, appropriate clothing and perhaps a few heaters for your reception, that’s hardly the end of the world.

Personally, I’d take a crisp winter afternoon over standing in direct sunlight sweating through a suit any day of the week.

An Earlier Sunset? That Could Be a Good Thing!

Here’s another little benefit of winter weddings that often gets overlooked.

The sun sets earlier.

Now, from a photography perspective, that’s something you’ll definitely want to plan around.

That beautiful golden-hour light that photographers love so much? You’ll want to make sure your ceremony and photo timeline allow you to take advantage of it before the sun disappears.

But here’s the upside.

With the sun setting earlier, there’s often a natural opportunity to move the celebrations indoors and get the reception underway a little sooner.

And depending on how you’ve structured your day, that could mean more time enjoying your reception with your favourite people.

Which, let’s be honest…

More time to party is hardly a bad thing!

Of course, it all comes down to your venue, your reception package and how you’ve planned your run sheet, but it’s certainly another little advantage worth considering.

Here’s Another Little Bonus… Availability!

Now, this is something that couples might not necessarily consider when choosing their wedding date.

Winter generally falls outside the busiest wedding periods in Southeast Queensland.

And that can come with a pretty handy advantage.

Availability.

You know that photographer you’ve been following on Instagram?

That celebrant your friends haven’t stopped raving about?

Or that incredible venue you’ve had your heart set on?

Well, depending on the date, you might find they’ve got a little more room in their calendar during winter.

And considering how quickly popular wedding dates can disappear, that’s certainly worth thinking about.

Now, I’m not going to promise that every venue or vendor will be available, but it could be a positive step towards securing the team you’ve been dreaming of.

And who knows, it might even save you a few dollars because it’s not peak season.

Happy days.

It’s Not About Finding the Perfect Season.

Here’s the thing.

Every season has something beautiful to offer.

Spring weddings can be incredible.

Autumn weddings? Absolutely stunning.

And summer weddings can be bloody awesome too, particularly when the venue, timing and conditions all come together.

I’m certainly not suggesting there’s anything wrong with choosing those times of year.

But what I am suggesting is that couples shouldn’t automatically rule out winter simply because they’ve heard it’s not the ideal time to get married.

Because here in Southeast Queensland, that advice doesn’t necessarily stack up.

And if you’re someone who loves the outdoors, wants to avoid the intense heat, or simply likes the idea of celebrating in a slightly cooler climate…

Winter might just be your perfect wedding season.

So, Who’s Keen for a Winter Wedding?

If you’re newly engaged and haven’t settled on a date just yet, here’s my challenge to you.

Don’t just look at the traditional peak wedding months.

Have a look at June, July and August too.

Explore the venues. Consider the weather. Chat with your favourite vendors.

And most importantly, think about what kind of experience you actually want for yourselves and your guests.

Because there’s something pretty bloody appealing about standing in front of your favourite people, exchanging vows in beautiful winter sunshine, and not having to worry about whether your suit is going to need dry cleaning before the reception even starts!

So I’m officially putting my hand up.

Let’s make winter weddings a bigger thing in Southeast Queensland.

Happy planning.

Ryan.
